"Los Suplicantes"
Wood engraving, End-grain maple block, Burnt umber oil-based ink, BFK Rives lightweight paper, buff (probably)
http://www.printmakingstudio.com/fullsize/suplicantes.htmlBased upon a Spanish fable which I recall vaguely from my childhood that has always to me represented: "God only helps the ones who help themselves." As the story goes, a very bad and long drought fell upon a small farming town in the province of Castilla. While some farmers went daily to the fields and worked to loosen the dry clots of earth under the torrid sun, others gave up and simply stayed in their farms begging and pleading to God that He should end the drought and thus their plight. The supplicants lamented so much and so loudly that they angered God and He gave them roots where they stood and turned them into praying trees with their limbs toward the heavens and bound forever to the earth. As I remember the story, the new trees shaded the fields and kept the crops from burning in the heat so that when the late summer rains came the crops were saved to those who had worked.

"Celtic Seasons Mandala"
Hand printed on mulberry paper with oil.The pre-christian Celtic tribes believed in three seasons, and that all things in life are a circle. A mandala is a meditation instrument used to direct and guide one's thoughts, hopefully leading to a higher understanding. Using trees to symbolize the celtic seasons and presenting them in a mandala inspire the viewer, leading to a deeper understanding that we are all part of the same cycle.

"Tree Dryad"
Reduction woodblock on kitataka paperIt is just called simply "Tree Dryad". It is actually taken from the Hamadryad, the nymphs that were so closely part of the trees they inhabited that it was said that they died along with their trees.

"Sacred Tree"
etching, deep bite and hand colored, printed on BFK cream
The beauty of trees is only rivalled by the beauty of a woman's body whose shape is visible withing the trunk and its branches. Although abstract in its shape , my sacred tree bears a woman inside. She is bending her body forward and her head leaning on one side as strong wind blowing from one side is forcing this innatural but flawing position. She is not struggling but leaves her body move with the wind which becomes one with mother nature.

"PROVERBS 3:18 - She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed".
Printed using Speedball water ink, KOZO paper, Lino reduction block.(Dan has posted a series of images showing the various states of his reduction block on the forum website,
these are available for viewing by forum members)
http://www.egroups.com/files/PrintAustralia/DanDew/My original intention was for the reduction block to be the image for the exchange, but realized into about the third color that due to technical difficulties, I would not have a sufficient amount of prints that were of the desired "quality" to send out. When I got to the fifth color, I realized that I had a pretty cool image all by itself, so I decided to print those up for the exchange, rather than some people recieving a poorer quality print.

WoodengravingThe Hidden Pool, like almost all of my work, relates to a place that has special significance to me. I pass these trees most days. They make a graceful group. However, if one walks across the field to reach them, there is a small pool of water and the mood changes to a hidden and mysterious spot. I could not find a large endgrain block that I could afford where the wood was proven to come from a sustainable source so, rather than make the print smaller, I engraved on a from Lawrences of London, which I built up to type high with mdf.
